-story improves a letter sent to SMH 1997 - his son and death - losing so many people and
didn’t make sense - knew what we were doing was crazy and not improving anything - 21 years
later not much has changed !
-Opening medically supervising injecting in Kings Cross - thought this would start many
progressive changes - hasn’t happened !

-Doctors - expect a perscritons - feel cheated if you don’t = told drugs are good for us !
-Ever since man started to communicate, grow, process things - drug use is part of our
existence !
-No group in the world that doesn’t use drugs !
-Three main purposes of drug use: Medication, recreation and religion !
-Christian - wine - and stories of alcohol !
-Hindus - cannabis - as lots of religions !
-Most places in the world have plants, mushrooms, cactus that they grow for recreational or
religious rituals !
-Every group in the world uses drugs - one group not until the beginning of the century -
Esikmos never used any drug until the beginning of the last century !
-Latest statics of alcohol - they use more alcohol than any other population in the world - now
fast catching up and taking over !
-Aus: we use all the drugs mentioned - many people use the substances - same reason as any
other group - always had alcohol as our drug of choice - more than 90% of Aussies use and
consume alcohol - PM in book of records for alcohol use Hawkes!
-Harm reduction strategy policy to try and ease the damage of rum in early colonies - plant
hoops and make beer - in trying to tackle problem of rum we est. a far bigger problem by
introducing us to beer!
-Policies we adopt around drug use is the problem !
-Minority of people are always anti-drugs and anti-alcohol - Aussie strong temperance
movement - sign pledge of trying to stop people from using alcohol and other drugs - Major
Brin Walters - head of drug and alcohol treatment service in Salvos - fervent anti-drug
campaigner - did not believe in any policy that condoned or support drug use in any shape of
form - hard line tactics to punish people !
-Minority always there but with incredibly loud voices !
-History of drug policy and way gov and countries frame their policy - similar to the way families
deal with drugs - family discovers - first tactic is to stop and control and issue ultimatums and
give the directions - similar to gov. Tactics - trying to be hard line and force them into treatment
and stopping them - will keep trying to point that no matter what in most cases they won’t stop
that person using drugs - start to let go and accept this can’t be directed things change -
communities like kings cross - problematic substance abuse for a long time - 1999 try a
different tactic - injecting facility and things changed - no longer people lying in streets od and
syringes everywhere - people safer and injecting facility did its job !
-Microcosm and macrocosm - family vs. country !
How son’s drug use and death effected his family !
-21 year old story - sooty about heroine - not major substance that causes problems but on its
way back - signs of return of heroine - verge of another bout of heroine !
-Mid-1990s it was a problem !
-Can happen anywhere to any family under any circumstance!
-Very popular, elite athlete achieving well - popular with teachers, friends parents - stood up for
underdog, liked music - hamlet in school play, leader in some field - not a goody two-shoes -
got into strife in adolescents - graffiti - pushed physical boundaries all the time !
-Not my family, not my child - if any of his children do drugs he’d say no way - enjoying other
things far too much to do drugs - he’d used alcohol underage - cannabis and such - but Tony
still thought no - shock of life son told him!
-No signs until think about - all the signs!
-Cycle of drug use - process - start pre-contemplation phase (happy user) start to use any from
curiosity and continue b/c they like it applied to any substance - they don’t have a problem,
they’re enjoying it, just the benefits, dismiss the negatives !
-family is also going through a process and cycle - happy user phase = family in denial - most
don’t know - they write off signs or don’t think it could be possible !
-Damien - using heroine for 18 months with gf - $32,000 - $300 a day habit !
-Sold all valuables, lost jobs - gf father took her away!
-Second stage for families - moves from major event like od, omission, police - emotions
included fear - knew people died - guilt - why my family? Why did I not see it? - grief - every
exception for his son disappeared == parents often experience and express anger - not
primary but the one that is expressed the most (fathers) - we are going to beat this, going to get
rid of this problem = control stage - two types - masculine and feminine - most gender father
and mother - not always, reverse - masculine control to fix it - feminine control juggles
everything - balls are drug user, partner, other children, household maintained, work -
everything flying around and trying to keep afloat - usually exhausts themselves !
-Control always fails !
-Chaos - everyone out of ideas !
-Death - cold turkey detox with his sister - didn’t work - next 12 months at times optimistic,
other times bleak and despaired - !
