Receiving skills
Foundation of interpersonal skills
!Silence, non-verbal attending"
!From there we can build upon our skills"

messages !within individual cultural contexts"
!eg. Communicating with someone with a mental disability "
Barriers to intercultural communications
!Attitudes, values and beliefs"
!Perceptual beliefs (stereotyping, prejudice)"
!Physical preference (personal space, use of time, comfort needs)"
!Linguistic (intonation, colloquialisms, accent)"
!Emotional (negativity, stress, overwhelmed, uncertainty)"
To maximise communication, look for signals that your message is not being received as
you intend, and vice versa."
Be aware of preconceived ideas about other cultures that you may be bringing to an
interaction."
We all make assumptions, they are very powerful in directing our thoughts and
interactions. Therefore, be aware of it."
Often, assumptions are false or based on incorrect, incomplete or generalised information"
Being aware of your assumptions can help you notice whether you are viewing someone
as a person with individual characteristics as a general representation of a group."
Blocks to listening
!Comparing: trying to assess who is smarter, more competent, more emotionally
healthy - you or the other? Some focus on who has suered more, who is a bigger victim
(I’m really stressed because I’ve got a 1500 word assignment and work tonight. Yeah well
I’ve got 3 assignments due and I’m working all weekend!)"
!Mind reading: doesn’t pay as much attention to what people say and typically
guesses what the other person is really thinking or feeling (you okay? yeah I’m just tired)
but you think they’re mad at you that’s why they don’t want to talk"
!Rehearsing: you don’t have time to listen when you’re rehearsing what to say.
Your whole attention is on the preparation of your next comment. You have to look
interested but your mind is elsewhere, thinking about what you’re going to say next."
!Filtering: listening to dome things and not others. You may pay attention to see if
someone is angry/unhappy or if you’re in emotional danger. (are you listening to me?
yeah! but not really actually listening, just tuning in when they ask you something)"
!Judging: negative labels have powerful ramifications. If you prejudice someone as
stupid or incompetent, you don’t pay much attention to what they are saying. (dumb
person at work talking and you not really paying attention)"
