1101GIR Lecture 9: Anarchism
L9. Anarchism
What is Anarchism?
• Not the destruction of all order
• Rather, the replacement of centralised and hierarchical structures, especially the state, with
decentralised, self-governing forms of organisation
o E.g. Communes, syndicates, cooperatives
• Proudhon: "the absence of a master or a sovereign"

Anarchists Against the State
• In summary (Miller, 1984: 6-7)
o The state is a coercive body, which reduces freedom far beyond what is necessary for
coexistence
• Making law in the interests of its own preservation, rather than human wellbeing
o The state is a punitive body, imposing harsh and unnecessary punishment
o The state is an exploitative body, which uses taxation and economic management to
pursue its own goals ('anarcho-liberalism') or the enrichment of the capitalist class
('anarcho-socialism')
