WEEK 6 – Basic life support
Primary survey:
A – Airway maintenance and cervical spine
B – Breathing and ventilation
C – Circulation with haemorrhage control
D – Disability: neurological status, diabetes, documentation
E – Exposure/environmental control: completely undress patient but prevent
Hypothermia
DRS ABCD
Danger
• Identify hazards,
use PPE
Responsiveness
• Squeeze, shout,
watch for response
• If responsive –
put in recovery position
• If unresponsive –
move to next step
Send for help
• Raise alarm
Airway
• Remove
obstruction
• Open airway –
head tilt and chin lift or
jaw thrust
Breathing
• Look for chest
movement, listen for
breath sounds, feel for
air on cheek
• No longer then 10secs
CPR
• 30 compressions:2 breath
ratio
• or 100-120 compression
per min when not giving
breaths
