Document Summary

If i had to reduce all of educational psychology to just one principle i would say the single most important factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows (ausubel, Learning is not the transmission of ideas from a source to the receiver. Learners construct new ideas: people use their existing ideas to generate meaning out of new experiences, sometimes, existing ideas can"t explain an experience. If a new idea can explain the experience better than an existing idea, the person may adopt the new idea. Learning is highly dependent on the student"s social and cultural contexts (teachers, peers, family, media etc) Learn new ways to make meaning (eg collaboration) As children acquire language, they can share their ideas and experiences about how the world works: the learning process is mediated by language use, speaking and listening to others changes how a person makes meaning in the world.
