These distorted thoughts lead to maladaptive behaviours and emotions. Assumes that people disturb themselves through their own thoughts. Aim of therapy is to change thoughts through cognitive restructuring. Abc model: activating event, belief system. Intermediate beliefs: assupmtions, attitudes, expectations, core beliefs, consequences, emotions and behaviours.
