PSYC1002 Lecture 2: Lecture 2
Document Summary
Use (or development) of established measures, appropriate sample sizes. Reliability: refers to the consistency of measures - if we were to measure something more than once, would we get the same results, test-re-test of the same participant (static constructs) Consistency over time: inter-rater reliability - when two independent assessors (or more) deliver the same test at different times, can be established statistically using cronbach"s alpha. Consistency between items used to measure the construct. High correlations between indicators of the same construct. E. g. 10 questions on anxiety given to anxious person, you"d expect them to score highly on all/most of the questions. Scientific theory: constructed to explain and predict phenomenon, a theory is a good theory if it satisfies two requirements: It must accurately describe a large class of observations on the basis of a model which contains only a few arbitrary elements.
