MIRA3006 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Upper Gastrointestinal Series, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Leiomyoma
Document Summary
Oesophageal leiomyoma: neoplasms of mature smooth muscle cells and are the most common benign esophageal neoplasm. At barium examination, leiomyomas exhibit the typical intramural mass, appearing as smooth- surfaced cresent-shaped filling defects that form right angle or slightly obtuse angles with the adjacent esophageal wall. Malignant tumour of epithelial cells with stratified squamous differentiation. Malignant epithelial neoplasm that almost always arises from malignant degeneration of underlying barrett epithelium. May be indistinguishable from scc at imaging on the basis of morphologic findings. Majority of adenocarcinomas involve lower third of oesophagus and likely to invade the stomach. Diffused asymmetric thickening of the lower oesophageal wall. Double-contrast upper gi series is a valuable diagnostic test for evaluating structural and functional abnormalities of the stomach. The normal stomach is a j-shaped pouch that lies in the left upper quadrant. The cardia is characterized by 3 or 4 stellate folds that radiate to a central point at the junction, known as the cardiac (cid:862)rosette(cid:863)
