Beneath this is white (myelinated) matter, made up of tracts that joins different sections of the cortex. Complicated motor patterns allow us to do complicated actions, e. g. running, painting, playing an instrument. More synapses than reflexes = slower reaction time. Brain or spinal cord is the integration centre. Autonomic reflexes use smooth/cardiac muscles or body viscera (e. g. salivary glands) Used to maintain body functions, e. g. hr, bp, blood co2 lvls. Can use spinal cord (e. g. micturition reflex) or brain stem (e. g. Can use spinal cord (e. g. micturition reflex) or brain stem (e. g. hr, bp)f. Has many important integration centres for vital functions and reflexes. All information coming/going from the spinal cord must pass through here. Many nuclei (grey matter) for integration of reflexes, e. g. hr reg. , blood vessel diameter, respiration (medullary rhythmicity centre), coughing, swallowing, etc. Grey matter in the sleep centre, for rem sleep, and pontine respiratory centre, which works in conjunction with medullary rhythmicity centre.
