GMED2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Blunt Trauma, Medulla Oblongata, Sympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
Pain is whatever the person experiencing it says it is, existing whenever he says it does - an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. Acute pain only lasts for a maximum of 3-6 months - generally associated with tissue injury and inflammation, outcomes are of complete pain relief. Patient fell from a height of 3 metres while at work, landed on right calcanium (heel bone) Injury sustained from fall - pain caused by blunt trauma. Blunt trauma can cause concussions, abrasions, lacerations and fractured bones. Inflammatory response occurs due to tissue damage. Signs and symptoms: throbbing pain in right foot. Increased sweating (sympathetic nervous system has been stimulated causing an increase in secretions from sweat glands) Pallor (cutaneous blood vessels have constricted, reducing blood flow to the skin) Caused by injury or damage to tissues. Can be due to sprains, fractures, burns, bumps, bruises and inflammation.
