Document Summary

Common in all phospholipids: contain a phosphate group: Common types of phospholipids: glycerophospholipids, contains two fatty acids joined to a glycerol backbone. This part of the glycerophospholipid is hydrophobic: ester is linked to the first two carbons of glycerol and the phosphodiester polar group is linked to the third carbon of the glycerol. Usually the first carbon of glycerol backbone is attached to c16 or c18 saturated fatty acid. Usually the second carbon of glycerol backbone is attached to c18 or c20 unsaturated fatty acid: sphingolipids, have a polar head group and two non-polar tails, contains one fatty acid group attached to a sphingosine backbone. This part of the sphingolipid is hydrophobic: do not contain glycerol, contain sphingosine, glycolipids: Common in glycolipids: contain carbohydrates, the carbohydrate group on the glycolipids are polar: Common types of glycolipids: sphingolipids, contains one fatty acid group attached to a sphingosine backbone.
