Week 9 tutorial models of behaviour change. Motivational interviewing principles: express empathy, roll with resistance, developing discrepancy, support self-efficacy. What does the difficult" client look like: most difficult behaviours in clients to deal with: Ways to deal with difficult behaviour: communication styles and approaches. Move ownership to client: referral or involvement of others. Theory 1: intentions are the best predictor behaviour: theory of reasoned action (ajzen & fishbein, 1974) If one wants to know how someone is likely to act or behave, the best way is to understand what they intend to do. Intentions = attitude toward a particular behaviour & social influence. Theory 3: individual behaviour is a product of personal, behavioural and environmental. Factors: social cognitive theory (bandura, 1997, determinants of physical activity are not isolated, the most influential factor is the individual"s belief that she can successfully perform a desired behaviour (i. e. , level of self-efficacy). Goal: get client to start thinking about physical activity: consciousness raising.
