POPH3000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Smoking Cessation, Dyslipidemia, Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
Tertiary prevention aims to soften the impact of an ongoing illness or injury that has lasting effects. This is usually done by helping people manage long-term, often-complex health problems and injuries (e. g. chronic diseases, permanent impairments) in order to improve as much as possible their ability to function, their quality of life and their life expectancy. Strategies of symptomatic stage prevention -> limitation of future symptoms. Screening for complications due to disease or its treatments. Limit further damage and stop death -> slow, stop or reverse disease progression. Smoking cessation is the most successful way to prevent cardiovascular disease, and the best method to reduce the risk of further events. Other risk factors for this also increases the risk of cvd as well. Being active is a great way to reduce cvd risk. Abnormal elevation of blood lipids, most notably, cholesterol. Is a risk factor (for things like cvd) and a disease in itself.
