Document Summary

Lecture 6: research design and addressing limitations and issues of bias. Research is fundamental to describing and explaining phenomena. Hypothesis testing allows us to examine a prediction of how risk factors/agents determine health outcomes. Can be bias -> non-representative of the population for example. Links between disease and certain risk factors or certain factors in general at an individual level. Only know about prevalence of risk factors within a population. Cannot ascertain if the individual that has the disease also has the risk factor. Cannot make a temporal association between risk factor and disease -> therefore, cannot establish causality. Poph3000 - introduction to population helth page 1 disease -> therefore, cannot establish causality. Only longitudinal designs can allow us to generate and test specific hypothesises relating to cause and effect. Share common risk factor, or random sample to reflect population. Interview at only 1 point in time, put can make longitudinal through prospective and retrospective studies.
