NEUR3101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Visual Cortex, Auditory Cortex, Complex Cobordism
Document Summary
Moving away from individual cells and toward a circuit system. Experiment - orientation tuning (using lines to tell if neurons distinguish orientation of line) Neurons extract of certain part of the visual field -> certain patterns excite the neuron. By listening to neural activity, we can understand their processing. Neurons "sample cells" fire when lines are in a certain orientation. Cell will fire when line in a particular location. Does not get excited when the line is horizontal. Doesn"t matter the contrast of the line - a bright line vs dark line - same result. Lines are very important for the visual field. Can extract a great deal of information of liens. So it is good to understand that neurons extract this information of which is sort of high-yield - very important. Neuron of similar direction preference tend to group together. All colours correspond to neurons with different orientation preferences.
