Intrinsic motivation: motivation that is driven by an interest, exists within the individual, extrinsic motivation, comes from the outside of an individual. Work motivation: the psychological forces that determine the direction of a person"s behavior in an organization, a person"s level of effort, and a person"s level of persistence. What determines employees" performance: ability x constraints = performance, motivation x ability x constraints = performance. What motivates you: personal growth, satisfaction of doing a good job, helping others develop, finding meaning from efforts, being true to beliefs, making a difference, monetary compensation, power, title, public recognition, status, winning. They can encourage cheating, shortcuts and unethical behaviour. Engagement employees who know what is expected of them, who form strong relationships with co-workers and managers or who in other ways experience meaning in their work. Disengagement withdraw from work roles cognitively and emotionally, task performance is automatic or robotic, experience little autonomy and feel that their jobs are unimportant.
