Memory, forgetting and online memorialisation in contemporary vietnam. This lecture will focus on the topic of death and dying and as such may be a difficult topic for some. Anthony heathcote spent 12 months in southern vietnam conducting fieldwork relating to his focus on online memorials and found that the dead can be remembered through text, images, audio and video material based online. These online memorials are used as a platform to share ones stories, support one another and communicate with the deceased by updating them on recent events and keeping them involved in day to day life. Countries are involved in promoting collective memory by erecting statues and monuments to preserve the memory of and remind others of significant people and events. Memories are also sustained within social groups, families and institutions. A french sociologist who saw memory as a fundamental social process and coined the term.
