Document Summary
Guest lecturer: tait brimacombe (adelaide uni phd candidate) Gender: access to information, voice, content production. During 2013 conducted ethnographic study in the south pacific islands of vanuatu, fiji and the. Interviews: secondary sources, focus groups, participant observation. Women"s community radio station: cook islands. Power exercised usually is not as a result of the government, rather certain social bodies, and is more localised than centralised. Women in the south pacific tend to have their status dismissed through customs, religion and traditions. Additionally men reinforce women"s subordination and discrimination against them. There is also a high prevalence of violence towards women which seldom reported due to their unequal status and the reinforcement of male"s power and females submission. When it comes to new technologies and education, men tend to dominate these areas as well and disallow women to engage with them. There is also a strong reinforcement of the stereotypical ideals of men and women portrayed through the media.
