Conformity: compliance with standards, rules, or laws
Perfomativity: Performing who they are – Like lady Gaga, David bowie
Why do we wear clothing?
Body modification eg, doing hair, eyebrows, tattoo etc. Considered form of dress. Not
always been for modesty – more for social status.
Fashion: Style of dress from a particular time. Product of a place and time. Goes as far as
history, as men used to wear lots of lace and would sell their properties etc. to have lace.

being humble.
Apparel: Another word for what you wear. Eg seasonal clothes – winter we have coats and
jumpers etc.
1920’s: Gats, opulee, oe, eg Gats’s ardroe
9’s Women started wearing suits for work. Not much money so clothes were handed
down through families to make do and mend. Styles were even more masculine – like army
uniforms. Everything – including fabric was rashioned

david and yellow cloth star. Demarcation in society, race, gender – representative of who is

1950s: baby boom trying to rebuild their lives and start a family etc. TV, washing machines,
labor saving devices etc. were becoming common. Difference between status and roles
starts to depend on the style of the suit – was it tailor made, was the fabric expensive etc.

people judge others because of this.
Each period had a significant look, eg disco etc.
Future fashion is expressive of personality. Eg Lady Gaga, David Bowie. People have lots of
diversity and perform their identity to make a statement. More so with famous people but
this leaks into their followers who aim to recreate these outfits etc. Kim Kardashian wearing
provocative outfits normalizes this for young girls. Performativity

Marie Antoinette: famous for excessive lifestyle, over the top. Perform rank and status
through dress.
