Introduction to Neuroplasticity
• Basic introduction to nervous system
o Two types of cells : neurons and neuroglia
• PNS and CNS
▪ PNS
• Cranial, spinal, autonomic Nerves and their ganglia
• Somatic (voluntary control – motor / sensory info to /from NS)
• Autonomic nervous system (control of body not consciously
controlled)
▪ CNS
• Brain and spinal cord
• Grey = cell bodies of neurons and neuroglia
• White = axons of neurons and neuroglial cells
• Spinal Cord
• Brainstem (medulla, pons, midbrain)
• Cerebellum
• Diencephalon (thalamus, hypo/epi/sub thalamus)
• Cerebral Hemispheres (cortex, subcortical nuclei including basal
ganglia; coverings/meninges)
o Communication via tracts and pathways
o Afferent and Efferent
o Decussation
o Ipsilateral versus Contralateral
