Week 11 & week 12: justify that nociception occurs in the tissues but pain is in the brain. Pain is peripherally and centrally activated but mediated and interpreted centrally - Nociception only becomes pain if the brain decides to label it as such. It is not until stimuli reach the brain that they acquire meaning. Pain and distraction o distraction has a genuine affect on the brain: pain controlling centres in the brain are activated when a person is distracted from a painful stimulus. The psychological state (emotional state and mood) of the individual when receive stimulus can influence pain perception. Effect of looking at fearful expressions on discomfort, anxiety and neural activation during non-painful oesophageal stimulation. =subjects reported more anxiety and discomfort when viewing fearful face, than neutral faces. For the physio, it"s important to acknowledge the patient"s psychological states.
