● Health orientated public policy and health education act together to enhance the
health of individuals, families and communities
What is health education?
● Health education is provision of education for individuals/families and communities to
enable them to take steps to improve their health status and prevent disease
● Premise of empowerment for individuals to strive for whatever their notion of health is

● Aim of the 1986 Ottawa Charter was to call on all industrialised countries to develop
policies and provide support to enable the health of all people around the world to be
enhanced
● Fundamental conditions for health - basic human rights. 1948 Declaration of Human
Rights underpins the Ottawa Charter
● In reality many people in the world do not have access to these:
○ Peace, shelter, education, food, income, stable eco system, sustainable
resources, social justice and equity
