Culture:
• The aggregate of beliefs, attitudes, values, assumptions, and ways
of thinking that is shared by members of an organisation and taught
to new members
• Each organisation has unique culture, distinguished by its:
o Beliefs
o Philosophy
o Approaches to decision making and problem solving
• Based on the values and principles displayed by leaders
• Has its own stories and myths
• Determines how to respond to threats and opportunities in both the
external and internal environment
• Deeply rooted:
o Core essence of organisation
o Often first expounded by founder
• Weak:
o Little agreement on values, beliefs, and norms of member
behaviour
o Can work against strategy implementation
o No deeply felt sense of identification with the organisation
o Culture has little meaning to employees and managers
• Strong:
o Good for the bottom line
o Clear, explicit set of principles and values
