Cultural Safety Communication
● Cultural awareness
○ Being aware that there are differences between people
● Cultural sensitivity
○ To acknowledge and incorporate (as much as possible) these differences into
care provision
● Cultural competence
○ The ability of health professionals and systems to provide care to patients
with diverse values, beliefs and behaviours
● Cultural safety
○ This is achieved if the recipient of care feels that cultural beliefs and values
were respected within the interaction
Process
Cultural awareness → cultural sensitivity → cultural competence → goal of cultural safety
● Feel safe, free from discrimination and respected when accessing health services
Cultural Safety
● Cultural safety is a process beginning with cultural awareness
● Cultural awareness is recognising that cultural variation exists
● Cultural sensitivity is accounting for cultural difference in care
● Cultural competence is the ability of a service to cater for the diverse cultural beliefs
and values
● Cultural safety is determined by the client - Did they feel that their cultural views were
respected
Intercultural Interactions
● Time - Indigenous concept of time is different from Western culture
● Priorities - connecting personally comes before business
● Tone and rate of speech - rapid speech and raised voices can inhibit communication
● Kinship - not understanding the family and community relationships can impede
communication
