Document Summary

Attitudes - evaluative statements about object, people, or events. Cognitive component - description of or belief in the way things are. Sets the stage for the more critical part of an attitude. Affective component - emotional or feeling segment of an attitude reflected in the statement. Behavioral component - describes an intention to behave a certain way toward someone or something. Helps understand their complexity and the potential relationship between attitudes and behavior. Behavior - attitudes people hold determine what they do. Cognitive dissonance - any incompatibility between two or more attitudes or between behavior and attitudes. People alter either their attitudes or behavior to minimize the dissonance, or they develop a rationalization for the discrepancy. Desire to reduce dissonance depends on importance of the elements creating dissonance, the degree of inline we believe we have over the elements, and the rewards of dissonance. High rewards accompanying high dissonance tend to reduce tension inherent in the dissonance.
