Social cognition: refers to the processes of perception and judgment with which we make sense of our social world: our perception and interpretation of our partnership are important. What we think helps to determine what we feel, and then how we act. This is not a problem if our judgments are always accurate. But, there are many ways to interpret an event, and we can make mistakes even when we have confident that we have arrived at the truth. The judgment we form of others after the first meeting continues to influence our perception of them months later. Example: if we don"t like someone after an initial interaction, we will avoid further contact with them. Some first impressions last because they are discerning and correct: sometimes its easy to see who is nice and who isn"t, and it we are right, there is no need to change our initial perception of the person.
