Writers draft each main idea when beginning an essay. In this stage, you construct your idea clusters so they hold up this stage. Paragraph: set of sentences that develop an idea or example. It allows the reader to see the essay building step by step. Paragraph indent of half an inch is used in academic writing. In business writing, a line space above the paragraph is used instead of indents: focus on one main point or example in one paragraph. Sentences are the unit that elaborate on one main point. Start a new paragraph when you introduce a new reason that supports your thesis. Paragraphs in the first draft don"t have to be perfect. Example on page 54: signal the main idea of you paragraph with a topic sentence. Topic sentence: sentence that announces a paragraphs main idea. Sometimes, the sentences in a paragraph will lead to a unifying conclusion.
