Document Summary

Semicolons: used to join statements that are closely related and grammatically equivalent. They are also used to mark major breaks within some sentences that contain commas. Semicolon is an effective way to link two clauses if readers are able to see the relationship between the two without coordinating conjunctions. Each clause can stand alone as a sentence, but the writer chose a semicolon to mark the close relationship between the statements. Example: tracy kidder wanted to write about architecture; her book house is the result. Philip had completed the assignment; lucy had not. Use semicolons with transitional expressions that connect independent clauses. Transitional expression: a word or phrase that links one idea to another o o. Include transitional phrases: after all, even so, for example, in addition, on the contrary. Include conjunctive adverbs: (consequently, however, moreover, nevertheless, then, therefore) When a transitional expression appears between two clauses, it is preceded by a semicolon and usually followed by a comma.
