Chapter two - ways and means of psychology. A theory must be veri able and ask why questions. The ongoing nature of science - ideas build on eachother , slow. Objective data collection, systematic observation, reliance on evidence vs. Subjective data collection, hit or miss observation, ignored counter evidence. In science only evidence can settle belief disputes. A deduction is proven if the general premise is true and the logic is valid. An induction goes beyond the known data and thus can never be proven. Science doesn"t prove things because all information about the outside observation world is inductive. Hypothesis: a possible way things could be, a tentative cause and effect reaction. Theory: an explanation for the ways things re, usually supported by a lot of data which provides testable hypotheses. Quality of the data (good vs. bad) > belief in the theory is irrelevant to its quality. The set of beliefs that most people have about human behaviour.
