Chapter 5 anxiety, trauma-related and obessive-compulsive disorders. Anxiety: negative mood state characterized by bodily symptoms of physical tension, and apprehension about the future : future-orientated mood state characterized by marked negative affect, somatic symptoms of tension, apprehension about future danger or misfortune. This can also result in avoidance (ostridge affect) Some anxiety can cause you to preform better (it can be adaptive) Fear: present-orientated mood state, marked negative affect. Immediate fight or flight response to danger or threat: strong avoidance tendencies or wanting to escape. People with panic disorders will experience these type of panic attacks more often. Inherit vulnerabilities for anxiety & panic but not anxiety disorders: stress and life circumstances activate underlying vulnerability. Biological causes and inherent vulnerabilities: anxiety and brain circuits gaba, noradrenergic and serotonergic systems, corticotrophin releasing factor (crf) and the hpa axis, limbic system. Limbic system mediator between brain stem and cerebral cortex.
