Document Summary

Module 12: how does the nervous system work. Learning objective twelve: name the two major types of cells in the nervous system and describe the primary functions of each. The brain is part of the central nervous system, so when referring to the nervous system it automatically means brain. The nervous system works because the basic unit of all the nervous systems are neurons. Neurons are one of the major types of brain cells. The neuron (nerve cell) is the fundamental building block of the nervous system. They are designed to receive information from the environment and from other neurons, and to transmit this information to other neurons, or to our muscle or to our glands in order for us to make a response. Communication between neurons is necessary for normal functioning of the brain and the spinal cord. Arrows in photo indicate path of travel of information.
