Things that will be covered on the test. Where medea, lysistrata and antigone would be played, major open air theatre. Plays were written competitively and people would judge plays to gain prizes. Tragedies played more than comedies because tragedies are considered higher class/sophisticated, the people who played in it are part of established myths. Festival in honor of the god dionysus, central event were the plays (seen above) God of wine, drama, and masks; acting allowed you to wear identities. Also artistic competition, winning $ and kleos. Use stories and myths and characters we know, nobility and important people. Plots mean real harm and stories end badly. Considered more sophisticated than comedy, and people from the higher classes viewed. Aristotle called it baser, for people who were inferior, since humor relies on the base/ugly--comedy laughs at ugliness not pain. Comedic masks were often distorted and grotesque, so were costumes.
