Carolus linnaeus developed the current scheme of classification based on morphology, hierarchical taxonomic framework and binomial nomenclature. Seven mandatory ranks - kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. King phillip came over for good soup. Any organism must be placed in each of these 7 ranks. Additional ranks may be added such as superfamily, subfamily, superorder, suborder etc. Morphology - the comparative study of the form of organisms. Species epithet - the title given after the genus ex) anguilla japonica, in this title the species epithet is japonica. The same species epithet can be used for a variety of organisms that do not have to share any relation ex) camellia japonica is a flower while anguilla japonica is the japanese eel. The genus name must always be unique, two species can not share the same genus name. Binomial nomenclature - refers to the two part name given to species ex) anguilla japonica, the genus here is anguilla.
