People commit crimes because of anomie (normlessness - norms are unclear, confused, or absent. Society puts pressure on individuals to achieve socially accepted goals (such as the american dream) though they lack the means, this leads to strain which may lead the individuals to commit crimes. Lack of opportunities leads people to commit crimes. Laws privilege certain groups, protects the affluent and powerful, not neutral (criminogenic environment, breeding criminal behaviour) We are influenced by intensity, frequency, duration of contacts. An act becomes deviant when it is labelled as deviant by a group that is socially powerful. Ppl who are labelled as deviant are more likely to reoffend. Violence against women is a social problem. Critiques how women who commit violence are constructed as victims, mad, or bad. Seen as individual pathology rather than considering the context and underlying conditions.
