Document Summary

Almost all plants are capable of sexual reproduction; even if it is rare in a plant. It is the only form of reproduction that generates new genets. One is it produces new genetically distinct individuals. Diploid parent produces pollen and egg cells which fuse to produce an embryo in a seed: pollen is transferred from the anther of male parent to the stigma of female parent. A pollen grain usually contains 2 haploid nuclei not one. When a plant is fertilized there are 2 fertilization events that occur. One (haploid) pollen nuclei fertilizes the egg nucleus generating a new (diploid) embryo. The second nucleus combines with 2 or more end. The other nucleus is combined with 2 or more the endosperm nuclei to produce the nutritive tissue, the endosperm. The embryo can"t survive unless a second nucleus has fused with 2 or more endosperm nuclei to produce the endosperm; seed needs endosperm to survive.
