Networks are important because organizations rely on effective data transmission: they enable social media, the web, real-time communication. Data transmission has been increasing due to netflix, amazon, facebook and other new innovations. Data communications: movement of computer information from one point to another by means of electrical or optical transmission systems. Telecommunications: transmission of voice and video as well as data that implies long distance transmission. Client: user device to access network and receive data from server (desktops, laptops) Server: device that stores and transmits data to a client (web server, mail server) Circuit: pathway or connection between client and server (copper wire, fiber optic cable) Local area network (lan): covers a small defined area which might be a single floor, work area or building. Wireless local area networks (wlan): local area network that uses wireless circuits. Backbone network (bn): high-speed network connecting other networks together and may encompass hundreds of feet to several miles.
