Background and context

When a cell takes a turn, a new leading edge generates in the direction of movement. If these extensions formed in all directions at once, the cell would not be able to determine the specific direction of movement. To move in a particular direction, a cell requires signals to coordinate events at the front of the cell as well as events at the back and, also, signals to tell the cell where its front actually is.
