Background and context
The plasma membrane is selectively permeable, meaning that certain substances can freely pass through the membrane, some are transported across it, and some are prohibited from passing in or out.
Passive transport requires no energy. The movement occurs along the concentration gradient.
But in active transport, movement occurs opposite the concentration gradient. Thus, energy is needed for this transportation.
