Background and context

Cells require large and sufficient surface area for the exchange of nutrients or wastes with their external environments.  When the large cell is cut into smaller cells it changes the surface-area-to-volume ratio. So, when the surface-area-to-volume ratio is high, then the exchange of nutrients or waste with the environment will be faster.
