Background and context
Osmosis is a cell transport mechanism that selectively allows the movement of water through the semi-permeable membrane. Osmosis most probably occurs through aquaporins, where the water moves from higher to lower concentrations. Osmosis has different effects on cells based on the concentration of solute. On increasing the concentration of the solute, the water moves back and forth across the membrane by osmosis which affects the size and shape of the cells.
