Background and context

The brain, spinal cord, and all other connected nerves make up the human nervous system, which is an organ system. The neurological system and the endocrine system collaborate to keep the body under control and coordinated. The nervous system sends electrical messages to a target organ, such as a muscle, via nerves. When a chemical response is triggered later, a similar response in the target organ will begin. The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system are the two main divisions of the human nervous system. The brain and spinal cord are part of the central nervous system, and all of the nerves from the central nervous system are part of the peripheral nervous system.
