Background and context
Vertebrates are animals with a backbone inside their bodies. The major categories are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Backbones are absent in invertebrates. Insects and jellyfish have a soft bodies, but spiders and crabs have a hard outer covering protecting their bodies.
