Background and context

Cloning can be divided into two types: cloning small DNA fragments (molecular cloning) and cloning entire organisms (reproductive cloning). Using restriction enzymes, the desired DNA fragment is inserted into a bacterial plasmid, which is then taken up by a bacterium termed host and used to express the foreign DNA.
