Background and context

Protists can eat a variety of things and can be aerobic or anaerobic. The presence of chloroplasts distinguishes photosynthetic protists. Other protists are heterotrophs, meaning they feed on organic matter. Amoebas and other heterotrophic protists consume particles through phagocytosis, a process in which the cell membrane engulfs a food particle inward, pinching off an intracellular membranous sac, or vesicle, termed a feeding vacuole.
