Background and context

Viruses differ in terms of structure, mode of replication, host, and target cells. Viruses are non-cellular as well as parasitic and have no internal organs, metabolic processes, or plasma membranes. Virions contain either DNA or RNA and may have an outer layer of proteins, or sometimes an outer membrane that is made up of phospholipid membranes that are derived from the host cell and proteins.
