Background and context

The autonomic nervous system, often known as the visceral nervous system, controls and regulates involuntary smooth muscle motions. It is made up of pre-ganglionic fibers from the ganglia, as well as post-ganglionic fibers from the central nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is divided into two parts: the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system. They are diametrically opposed to one another.
