Background and context
The spinal cord is a white, soft cord that stretches from the brain and forms the vertebral column, which is encircled by vertebral bodies. It is linked to the brain in a location known as the brainstem. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves that carry data from the spinal cord to the body and then back to the brain.
