Background and context
Extinction is the process in which both animals and plants have disappeared over time as they could not adapt to changing conditions. A large number of organisms that existed on the earth are extinct. It is a continuous evolutionary process.
As a result of extinction, the role of an extinct species in its ecosystem may get filled by another newer species or even an existing one. The extinction rate of the species on Earth is between 0.1 and 1 species per 10,000 species per 100 years.
