Background and context

Energy flow in an ecosystem refers to the transport of energy up trophic levels and across food chains and webs. This process begins with plants that can generate their own energy from the sun. This energy is transferred to herbivores (primary consumers) and ultimately to higher levels of consumption. Individuals at the higher levels are eventually consumed by decomposers when they die.
