Background and context

The chromosomal theory of inheritance is proposed by Theodor Boveri and Walter Sutton in 1902. They observed the separation of chromosomes into the daughter cells during meiosis, and the embryonic development in sea urchin, which does not occur without the chromosomes. They together identified the chromosomes as the genetic material, which is responsible for Mendelian inheritance.
